Overview

Introduction

TZGISUG has started working on a list of all available shapefiles relevant for GIS practitioners in Tanzania. The idea is not new to the community, but it is only recently at a TZGISUG meeting at the New Arusha hotel in December 2007, that the decision was made to start the work.

At the meeting it was decided that TZGISUG will host a 'catalogue' / guide / metaindex of where to find spatial data.
  • The list should include information about Access / contacts / limits of how to use it
  • We will use the TikiWiki? website to make this list
  • There should be an ability to comment / criticise layers – how to improve them
  • Link to a websites where the files could be downloaded
  • The list of files will hopefully be helpfull for national level governmental initiatives.

The decision to host a catalogue and not the files themselves is based on issues like rights, data integrity, workload, and more. We might however still upload data sets which we are sure are in the public domain.

Contributing to the work these days means that any registered TZGISUG user may add to the mentioned spatial data list.

What has been done?

Based on the meeting the following work has been undertaken:
  • A database for the spatial data objects has been designed.
  • Access for registered TZGISUG users has been provided.
  • Around 30 objects has been added.

What needs to be done?

We need to add files to the spatial data list. This is done by opening this link:

This will open a list where the current objects may be inspected. To know more about an object click on the name in the column Dataset name.

To add data you need to log in. This is done by registering and logging in by selecting Log in from the Admin-menu.If you can not find your item on the list you press the Insert new item. This will open a page where you can add information about your object:

Once the information has been added information will be sent to Ragnvald Larsen. He will proceed to check the object information.

Regular registered users may not delete any registered objects. You still have the possibility to select an object with errors and correcting it.

RSS news feed on progress

To be able to know what is added we have made available an RSS newsfeed. Copy the link below to your favorite newsfeed (Outlook, Google desktop, etc) and know what data is really around:
